Occidental College is a private, co-educational liberal arts college located in the historic Eagle Rock neighborhood of Los Angeles, California. Founded in 1887 by clergy and members of the Presbyterian Church, Occidental College, or, "Oxy" as it is affectionately called by students and alumni, is one of the oldest liberal arts colleges on the West Coast. Although no longer formally affiliated with the Presbyterian Church, Occidental still retains the progressive and egalitarian values of its founders.
The Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching selected Occidental as a "community engagement institution".
