Pre-Veterinary Studies
Similar to pre-med, pre-veterinary studies teaches the underlying principles needed to take the full veterinarian program. Pre-vet majors focus on the tools required to advance into animal medicine. Veterinarians need the obvious skills to take care of animals but they also need skills in behavioral management and business administration.
A big subset of the pre-vet path includes filling the requirements necessary for veterinary school, which can be even more competitive than traditional medical school. Some of the classes students take include: biology, anatomy, physiology, zoology, genetics and even chemistry.
Many students choose community colleges or less expensive learning institutions to complete these required courses before transferring to a full veterinary program to save on tuition. Once the higher education is completed, veterinarians can work in several areas, from their own private practice to animal hospitals, marine studies, zoos and animal research.
