As a college student, this is your transition from childhood to adulthood. The next few years will prepare you to join the workforce and become more independent from your parents.
A common question many incoming freshmen ask is whether they should get involved on campus and, if so, to what extent. While campus involvement is valuable, understanding your personal limits and balancing your commitments is even more crucial.
Knowing how much you can handle will allow you to make the most of your college experience without becoming overwhelmed.
However, even though joining many different extracurriculars can seem exciting, it is important to find a way to balance all of your responsibilities. When I became a freshman, I got advice to join one club related to your profession, one club that you are passionate about, and another that will help develop your leadership skills. Using this advice can allow you to join clubs that will further you in your career and a club that will allow you to express yourself.
Adhering to this structure will also stop you from overcommitting to multiple clubs causing burnout that can hinder your academic focus. Managing your time is essential to become successful in both your extracurriculars and your studies.
Balancing these responsibilities can make it difficult to engage in campus activities, and that is okay as each student must find what works best for them. Additionally, some students might prefer to focus on other avenues of development, such as internships, research opportunities, or volunteering in the broader community. These experiences can provide equally valuable skills and networking opportunities that align with their specific career goals.
Ultimately, the college experience looks different for everyone, and students should feel empowered to pursue the path that best suits their needs, without the pressure to conform to traditional notions of campus involvement. The key is finding a balance that allows them to succeed academically, professionally, and personally.
