According to the Bureau of Labor Statistics (BLS), the expected rate of growth for Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) jobs between now and 2029 is 8%. While that may not seem like an exceedingly large figure, all other occupations are expected to see growth of roughly 3%.
It's not surprising. As we continue to evolve technologically, we need more workers in these fields. Given the demand, it’s also not surprising that these college majors make the highest salaries after graduation.
If you’re considering a career in a STEM field, it will be to your advantage to find and complete a STEM internship. Your internship will not only give you a glimpse of the career you’re interested in, but a look at how STEM will directly impact our progress and evolution as a society.

You must submit a letter of interest, current CV, and a letter from a mentor discussing in detail your skills for the desired position. - Pathways Internship Program Deadline: Varies Description: A variety of STEM internships are available with the Federal government under the Pathways Internship Program. Through this internship experience, you may complete a NASA internship or work with the Department of Treasury or Forestry Services. You must be at least 16 years of age to apply. - Air Force Research Laboratory Scholars Program Internship Deadline: Varies Description: The Air Force Research Laboratory Scholars Program Internship is available to students enrolled or accepted at an educational institution and who are taking at least a half-time academic course load leading to a degree or certificate for the semester immediately preceding internship session. You must be a U.S. Citizen, provide a PII for Air Force, have STEM experience (paid and voluntary), and completed STEM courses in order to be considered for this position. - Field Service Engineer Internship Deadline: Varies Description: The Field Service Engineer Internship is open to those that already have a Bachelor’s degree in engineering, life sciences, or related technical discipline, ideally with intern experience in their field of study. Roles beyond entry level require a Bachelor's degree in engineering, life sciences, or related technical discipline, or equivalent work experience and minimum 2 years’ experience with troubleshooting and instrument repair and maintenance. - Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) Deadline: Varies Description: The Science and Engineering Apprenticeship Program (SEAP) is open to high school students who are looking to participate in research at a Department of Navy (DoN) laboratory during the summer. You must have completed at least Grade 9, be currently enrolled in high school (but may be taking college level classes for college credit), be 16 years of age or older by the internship start date to participate, and be a U.S. Citizen. - Data Engineer Intern Deadline: Varies Description: The Data Engineer Intern at HBO is available to students currently pursuing a BS or MS in computer science, engineering, or related technical discipline. You must have a drive to learn, ask questions, and motivation to find the answers.
