How Can I Prepare Myself for the ACT?
Preparing for the ACT will help you succeed on test day.
As the number of students taking the ACT increases, many ask how to prepare themselves for it. Below, you will learn everything you need to know about the ACT and how to prepare for it.

What is the ACT?

Many students aren't aware of what the ACT is or how key it can be for their future. According to The Princeton Review, the ACT is an exam used by most colleges and universities to make admissions decisions. It is a multiple-choice, pencil-and-paper test administered by ACT, Inc.
It is one of the most important tests to take to prepare for the future. Although it is not required for every college, it is important to have options.

Topics

There are four topics that are included in the ACT. Those being English, Math, Reading, and Science. The English ACT includes 75 questions.
The Math ACT includes 60 questions and the Reading and Science ACT have the lowest number of questions at 40. When taking the ACT, you will also have the opportunity to do an optional writing portion. Anyone who takes the ACT will also have the opportunity to take it in on paper or online. Recently, there have been some changes with the online version, making it more flexible. The online version also gives you more time to respond to questions.

Registration and Scheduling

To register, you will need to go to act.org. There, you can register and will find any additional information you will need. To take the ACT, it will cost $69. But, if you were to also do the writing portion, it would be $94. The average score is 21 while the max is 36. When looking at the 2024-2025 schedule, there are many dates when you can take it. Registration does have a deadline, and if you apply after that date there will be a late fee if you wish to take it.

The Prep Stage for the ACT

Being prepared is the best thing you can do for your future. Down below is advice on when and how to best prepare yourself for the ACT, along with some additional useful information.

When to Begin

Of course, depending on when you want to take the ACT will determine when you should begin to prepare. The best time to take it for the first time is fall or early spring of your junior year. This gives you plenty of time to retake if needed. The best idea is to plan for three months in advance of your test.

Study Methods

The first thing you should always focus on is how to enhance your environment before studying. This would include doing things like getting lots of rest, listening to calming music, eliminating distractions, and eating healthy foods.  The ACT's advice is to take challenging classes, take a practice test, schedule study time, keep a positive attitude, know yourself and your abilities, and consider using ACT test prep materials. These things will help you become familiar with the format and the idea of the test.

ACT Scholarship Opportunities

If you have a high score, the ACT website recommends applying for these scholarships: • The Air Force ROTC Scholarship has a minimum ACT Composite score required is 26. • The University of Illinois has a Chicago Chancellor’s Fellows Scholarship.
