As Sci Fi as it sounds, high school and college students that are pc gamers have many future career possibilities. Lifehack adds, you could find a job as a video game artist, audio programmer, writer, game programmer, game designer, game producer, game tester and even professional gamer. But did you know there are college esports teams for competitive gaming, too? And some college varsity electronic sports (esports) teams are recognized by the National Association of Collegiate esports (NACE) organization. According to the NACE website, there are currently more than 170 university and colleges that are NACE members.

Top 5 College Esports Teams

Best Colleges ranks the below colleges as some of the best in America. According to Best Colleges, “These collegiate esports programs maintain competitive teams, provide resources that enhance school communities, and boost career opportunities.” The five varsity teams below have won various, esports national championships and have some of the best equipment and gaming facilities in the nation:
  1. Miami University – Oxford, Ohio
  2. You can watch live tournaments and see Miami University’s schedule on their Twitch account.
  3. Maryville University – Saint Louis, Missouri
  4. Maryville’s Twitch account highlights their two national championship titles and features a recent League of Legends battle with the University of Wisconsin.
  5. Robert Morris Experiential College – Chicago, Illinois
  6. Check out this 2017 semifinal championship tournament between Robert Morris University and Maryville University.
  7. University of California – Irvine, California
  8. This Twitch video covers an esports tournament that was held at the University of California.
  9. University of Utah– Salt Lake City, Utah
  10. Watch Overwatch and League of Legends gameplay from the University of Utah esports team.

What Esports Games Do College Teams Play?

Esports Observer reports games like Counter Strike, Dota 2, League of Legends, Fortnite, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare, Rainbow 6, Overwatch, PUBG, Hearthstone and Rocket League were the top esports games. With the 2020 prize money for all ten game tournaments totaling $65.5 million!

Award Amount: $2,000 The $2,000 Minecraft Scholarship is open to high school and college students. You must be a U.S. citizen, have a minimum GPA of 3.0 and submit an essay of at least 500 words that details your opinion on how Minecraft can be a positive influence on education and career development in order to be considered for this award.

Award Amount: $1,000 The Play! Pokemon Scholarship Program is open to students who are the top finishers in Play! Pokemon Events. You must be a full-time high school student or a full-time or part-time undergraduate or graduate student at a qualified college or university in order to be considered for this award.

Esports Scholarship

Deadline: Varies
Award Amount: Varies The Esports Scholarship is open to students who participate in the esports program at Juniata College. You must demonstrate academic ability and contribute to your school and community and your academic excellence and aspirations must be balanced with your competitive ability in order to be considered for this award.
