Whether you realize it or not, science has impacted just about every facet of our daily lives. It has helped to eradicate diseases, pushed the boundaries of technology, and contributed to our innate drive to explore and evolve across a variety of fields.
Finding ways that science has impacted your life is a slam dunk, and that’s why we’re encouraging students to apply for this
scholarship for high school seniors.
#ScienceSaves High School Video Scholarship
The #ScienceSaves Video Scholarship asks high school students to reflect on how science has impacted their lives for the better. Video submissions should answer one of two questions:
• What has science done for me?
• What has science done for somebody I know?
Submissions should not exceed 30 seconds, meaning this video
scholarship is quick and easy-to-enter. In addition to the video, applicants must complete a quick form that answers a few basic questions about themselves and their education experience and goals.
Judging Criteria
All videos will be judged by the following criteria:
•
Content: The video must show that this is the applicant’s own work. It must also answer one of the above questions clearly and succinctly.
•
Information/Explanation: In the video, the applicant should explain the science behind the advancement that has helped them or someone they know.
•
Production Layout/Technical Organization: To accurately judge the content of each video, the committee asks that applicants deliver videos with continuity, adherence to timing, and quality camera operation, sound, and editing.
•
Creativity/Originality: Finally, applicants will be judged on their video’s original video/storytelling techniques.

selected as scholarship recipients. The prizes will be distributed as such:

How to Create Your Video Scholarship Application
Students oftentimes pass over video scholarships because they believe the application process will be too difficult or time intensive. However, video scholarships, especially one with a short time requirement like the #ScienceSaves Scholarship, can be just as simple as a
short-essay scholarship.
When you’re creating a video for a scholarship application, keep the following tips in mind:
Stick to the time requirements.
The scholarship committee likely deliberated over how long – or short – video submissions should be, so respect their ruling and keep your video below or at the time limit. Going over may indicate that you can’t follow directions well, which is not a scholarship recipient quality that committees value.
Follow the directions carefully.
With that, follow all directions carefully, not just the timing constraints. Nothing will get your
scholarship application rejected faster than a failure to comply with directions.
Make sure your video and audio quality are clear.
It’s important for a video scholarship that you be seen and heard. Do not record your video in front of a busy background or in a noisy environment. The application is meant to be about you and your opinion or answer; make sure you’re heard.
Practice makes perfect.
Very few people can get their video scholarship submission in one take. Put some work into your application: write a script, rehearse it in front of the mirror, and shoot multiple takes of your speech. When you have a chance to rehearse and revise your scholarship application, take it and do it well.
